So far, so far. Guadalupe of Mexico in Spain is an exhibition of Prado National Museum (Madrid) which explores the circulation of the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Spain , the impetus of worship in the Modern Age, the relations between the Virgin of Guadalupe of Extremadura and the Mexican Virgin, and the role of artists in its dissemination. Present some 70 works , mostly from Spain and Mexico, including prints from Madrid and Seville.
The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was widely disseminated between 1650 and 1790, becoming a key religious symbol in Spain, Italy, the Philippines and Latin America . It was considered a miraculous image, with its beauty and technique serving as evidence of divine favor towards the inhabitants of New Spain. It was the image most reproduced and copied by New Hispanic artists, associated with the idea of a "revealed icon".
